Why I teach adults
I've been playing classical and fingerstyle guitar for as long as I can remember, and teaching it for a good part of that time. Somewhere along the way I noticed something: most of the adult students who got in touch with me weren't nervous about the guitar. They were nervous about being the oldest person in the room, or being talked to like a child, or being handed a school textbook and told to catch up. So I built my teaching specifically around adults — and especially around people learning later in life, often after retirement finally gives them the time they've wanted for years.
Credentials
I hold a Bachelor's degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a Professional Master of Education from Trinity College Dublin. The combination gives me both a deep grounding in guitar performance and the pedagogical training to teach effectively — particularly when it comes to adapting lessons for adult learners who come to the instrument with their own goals, their own musical tastes, and their own ideas about what they want to get out of it. When I'm not teaching guitar, I work as a freelance website developer — in fact, I built this website myself. You can find me at bromleywebworks.co.uk.
Teaching philosophy
I don't teach from a fixed syllabus. Some students want to work towards a graded exam; most don't, and are far more interested in finally being able to play a piece they've loved for thirty years. Lessons are built around what you actually want from the guitar — technique and reading are taught properly either way, because good habits make everything afterwards easier, but the destination is yours to choose.
Why Bromley Conservatoire
Lessons take place in a private, comfortable teaching room at Bromley Conservatoire, 23 East St, Bromley BR1 1QE — a proper music venue with a good instrument, decent acoustics and easy access, a short walk from both Bromley South and Bromley North stations, with parking at The Glades car park (7-minute walk). I'm not affiliated with the Conservatoire as an institution; I simply rent a room there because it's the right environment to teach in.
